  1. And if they call you a liar, truly messengers before you were called liars, and to Allah are all affairs returned.

  2. And if they call you a liar, so did those before them indeed call (their messengers) liars; their messengers had come to them with clear arguments, and with scriptures, and with the illuminating book.

  3. Have they not travelled in the land and seen how was the end of those before them while they were stronger than these in power? And Allah is not such that any thing in the heavens or in the earth should escape Him; surely He is Knowing, Powerful.

  4. Do they not consider how many of the generations have We destroyed before them, because they do not turn to them?

  5. And some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other.

  6. On thrones, facing each other.

  7. Then shall some of them advance to others, questioning each other.

  8. And certainly most of the ancients went astray before them,

  9. So they (people) advanced towards him, hastening.

  10. How many did We destroy before them of the generations, then they cried while the time of escaping had passed away.

  11. The people of Nuh and Ad, and Firon, the lord of spikes, rejected (messengers) before them.

  12. And they say: O our Lord! hasten on to us our portion before the day of reckoning.

  13. And when distress afflicts a man he calls upon his Lord turning to Him frequently; then when He makes him possess a favor from Him, he forgets that for which he called upon Him before, and sets up rivals to Allah that he may cause (men) to stray off from His path. Say: Enjoy yourself in your ungratefulness a little, surely you are of the inmates of the fire.

  14. Those before them rejected (prophets), therefore there came to them the chastisement from whence they perceived not.

  15. Those before them did say it indeed, but what they earned availed them not.

  16. And return to your Lord time after time and submit to Him before there comes to you the punishment, then you shall not be helped.

  17. And follow the best that has been revealed to you from your Lord before there comes to you the punishment all of a sudden while you do not even perceive;

  18. And certainly, it has been revealed to you and to those before you: Surely if you associate (with Allah), your work would certainly come to naught and you would certainly be of the losers.

  19. The Forgiver of the faults and the Acceptor of repentance, Severe to punish, Lord of bounty; there is no god but He; to Him is the eventual coming.

  20. The people of Nuh and the parties after them rejected (prophets) before them, and every nation purposed against their messenger to destroy him, and they disputed by means of the falsehood that they might thereby render null the truth, therefore I destroyed them; how was then My retribution!

  21. Have they not travelled in the earth and seen how was the end of those who were before them? Mightier than these were they in strength-- and in fortifications in the land, but Allah destroyed them for their sins; and there was not for them any defender against Allah.

  22. And certainly Yusuf came to you before with clear arguments, but you ever remained in doubt as to what he brought; until when he died, you said: Allah will never raise a messenger after him. Thus does Allah cause him to err who is extravagant, a doubter

  23. He it is Who created you from dust, then from a small lifegerm, then from a clot, then He brings you forth as a child, then that you may attain your maturity, then that you may be old-- and of you there are some who are caused to die before-- and that you may reach an appointed term, and that you may understand.

  24. Besides Allah? They shall say: They are gone away from us, nay, we used not to call upon anything before. Thus does Allah confound the unbelievers.

  25. And certainly We sent messengers before you: there are some of them that We have mentioned to you and there are others whom We have not mentioned to you, and it was not meet for a messenger that he should bring a sign except with Allah's permission, but when the command of Allah came, judgment was given with truth, and those who treated (it) as a lie were lost.

  26. Have they not then journeyed in the land and seen how was the end of those before them? They were more (in numbers) than these and greater in strength and in fortifications in the land, but what they earned did not avail them.

  27. And We have appointed for them comrades so they have made fair-seeming to them what is before them and what is behind them, and the word proved true against them-- among the nations of the jinn and the men that have passed away before them-- that they shall surely be losers.

  28. Naught is said to you but what was said indeed to the messengers before you; surely your Lord is the Lord of forgiveness and the Lord of painful retribution.

  29. And away from them shall go what they called upon before, and they shall know for certain that there is no escape for them.

  30. Thus does Allah, the Mighty, the Wise, reveal to you, and (thus He revealed) to those before you.

  31. And He it is Who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons the evil deeds and He knows what you do;

  32. Hearken to your Lord before there comes the day from Allah for which there shall be no averting; you shall have no refuge on that day, nor shall it be yours to make a denial.

  33. Or have We given them a book before it so that they hold fast to it?

  34. And thus, We did not send before you any warner in a town, but those who led easy lives in it said: Surely we found our fathers on a course, and surely we are followers of their footsteps.

  35. And ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before you: Did We ever appoint gods to be worshipped besides the Beneficent Allah?

  36. And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble messenger,

  37. Are they better or the people of Tubba and those before them? We destroyed them, for surely they were guilty.

  38. They shall wear of fine and thick silk, (sitting) face to face;

  39. Say: Have you considered what you call upon besides Allah? Show me what they have created of the earth, or have they a share in the heavens? Bring me a book before this or traces of knowledge, if you are truthful.

  40. And before it the Book of Musa was a guide and a mercy: and this is a Book verifying (it) in the Arabic language that it may warn those who are unjust and as good news for the doers of good.

  41. These are they from whom We accept the best of what they have done and pass over their evil deeds, among the dwellers of the garden; the promise of truth which they were promised.

  42. And he who says to his parents: Fie on you! do you threaten me that I shall be brought forth when generations have already passed away before me? And they both call for Allah's aid: Woe to you! believe, surely the promise of Allah is true. But he says: This is nothing but stories of the ancients.

  43. These are they against whom the word has proved true among nations of the jinn and the men that have already passed away before them; surely they are losers.

  44. So when they saw it as a cloud appearing in the sky advancing towards their valleys, they said: This is a cloud which will give us rain. Nay! it is what you sought to hasten on, a blast of wind in which is a painful punishment,

  45. Have they not then journeyed in the land and seen how was the end of those before them: Allah brought down destruction upon them, and the unbelievers shall have the like of it.

  46. Those who are left behind will say when you set forth for the gaining of acquisitions: Allow us (that) we may follow you. They desire to change the world of Allah. Say: By no means shall you follow us; thus did Allah say before. But they will say: Nay! you are jealous of us. Nay! they do not understand but a little.

  47. Say to those of the dwellers of the desert who were left behind: You shall soon be invited (to fight) against a people possessing mighty prowess; you will fight against them until they submit; then if you obey, Allah will grant you a good reward; and if you turn back as you turned back before, He will punish you with a painful punishment.

  48. Such has been the course of Allah that has indeed run before, and you shall not find a change in Allah's course.

  49. O you men! surely We have created you of a male and a female, and made you tribes and families that you may know each other; surely the most honorable of you with Allah is the one among you most careful (of his duty); surely Allah is Knowing, Aware.

  50. (Others) before them rejected (prophets): the people of Nuh and the dwellers of Ar-Rass and Samood,

  51. And how many a generation did We destroy before them who were mightier in prowess than they, so they went about and about in the lands. Is there a place of refuge?

  52. Therefore be patient of what they say, and sing the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before the setting.

  53. Taking what their Lord gives them; surely they were before that, the doers of good.

  54. Then his wife came up in great grief, and she struck her face and said: An old barren woman!

  55. And the people of Nuh before, surely they were a transgressing people.

  56. Thus there did not come to those before them a messenger but they said: A magician or a mad man.

  57. And some of them shall advance towards others questioning each other.

  58. Saying: Surely we feared before on account of our families:

  59. Surely we called upon Him before: Surely He is the Benign, the Merciful.

  60. And the people of Nuh before; surely they were most unjust and inordinate;

  61. Before them the people of Nuh rejected, so they rejected Our servant and called (him) mad, and he was driven away.

  62. In them shall be those who restrained their eyes; before them neither man nor jinni shall have touched them.

  63. Man has not touched them before them nor jinni.

  64. Reclining on them, facing one another.

  65. Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty.

  66. And what reason have you that you should not spend in Allah's way? And Allah's is the inheritance of the heavens and the earth, not alike among you are those who spent before the victory and fought (and those who did not): they are more exalted in rank than those who spent and fought afterwards; and Allah has promised good to all; and Allah is Aware of what you do.

  67. On the day when the hypocritical men and the hypocritical women will say to those who believe: Wait for us, that we may have light from your light; it shall be said: Turn back and seek a light. Then separation would be brought about between them, with a wall having a door in it; (as for) the inside of it, there shall be mercy in it, and (as for) the outside of it, before it there shall be punishment.

  68. Has not the time yet come for those who believe that their hearts should be humble for the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And that they should not be like those who were given the Book before, but the time became prolonged to them, so their hearts hardened, and most of them are transgressors.

  69. No evil befalls on the earth nor in your own souls, but it is in a book before We bring it into existence; surely that is easy to Allah:

  70. And (as for) those who put away their wives by likening their backs to the backs of their mothers then would recall what they said, they should free a captive before they touch each other; to that you are admonished (to conform); and Allah is Aware of what you do.

  71. But whoever has not the means, let him fast for two months successively before they touch each other; then as for him who is not able, let him feed sixty needy ones; that is in order that you may have faith in Allah and His Messenger, and these are Allah's limits, and the unbelievers shall have a painful punishment.

  72. Surely those who act in opposition to Allah and His Messenger shall be laid down prostrate as those before them were laid down prostrate; and indeed We have revealed clear communications, and the unbelievers shall have an abasing chastisement.

  73. And those who made their abode in the city and in the faith before them love those who have fled to them, and do not find in their hearts a need of what they are given, and prefer (them) before themselves though poverty may afflict them, and whoever is preserved from the niggardliness of his soul, these it is that are the successful ones.

  74. Like those before them shortly; they tasted the evil result of their affair, and they shall have a painful punishment.

  75. He it is Who raised among the inhabitants of Mecca an Messenger from among themselves, who recites to them His communications and purifies them, and teaches them the Book and the Wisdom, although they were before certainly in clear error,

  76. And spend out of what We have given you before death comes to one of you, so that he should say: My Lord! why didst Thou not respite me to a near term, so that I should have given alms and been of the doers of good deeds?

  77. Has there not come to you the story of those who disbelieved before, then tasted the evil result of their conduct, and they had a painful punishment?

  78. And certainly those before them rejected (the truth), then how was My disapproval.

  79. Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other.

  80. And Firon and those before him and the overthrown cities continuously committed sins.

  81. But what is the matter with those who disbelieve that they hasten on around you,

  82. Surely We sent Nuh to his people, saying: Warn your people before there come upon them a painful chastisement.
