  1. And they followed what the Shaitans chanted of sorcery in the reign of Sulaiman, and Sulaiman was not an unbeliever, but the Shaitans disbelieved, they taught men sorcery and that was sent down to the two angels at Babel, Harut and Marut, yet these two taught no man until they had said, "Surely we are only a trial, therefore do not be a disbeliever." Even then men learned from these two, magic by which they might cause a separation between a man and his wife; and they cannot hurt with it any one except with Allah's permission, and they learned what harmed them and did not profit them, and certainly they know that he who bought it should have no share of good in the hereafter and evil was the price for which they sold their souls, had they but known this.

  2. The patient, and the truthful, and the obedient, and those who spend (benevolently) and those who ask forgiveness in the morning times.

  3. When Allah will say: O Isa son of Marium! Remember My favor on you and on your mother, when I strengthened you I with the holy Spirit, you spoke to the people in the cradle and I when of old age, and when I taught you the Book and the wisdom and the Taurat and the Injeel; and when you determined out of clay a thing like the form of a bird by My permission, then you breathed into it and it became a bird by My permission, and you healed the blind and the leprous by My permission; and when you brought forth the dead by My permission; and when I withheld the children of Israel from you when you came to them with clear arguments, but those who disbelieved among them said: This is nothing but clear enchantment.

  4. And if We had sent to you a writing on a paper, then they had touched it with their hands, certainly those who disbelieve would have said: This is nothing but clear enchantment.

  5. The chiefs of Firon's people said: most surely this is an enchanter possessed of knowledge:

  6. That they may bring to you every enchanter possessed of knowledge.

  7. And the enchanters came to Firon (and) said: We must surely have a reward if we are the prevailing ones.

  8. He said: Cast. So when they cast, they deceived the people's eyes and frightened them, and they produced a mighty enchantment.

  9. And the enchanters were thrown down, prostrating (themselves).

  10. And they said: Whatever sign you may bring to us to charm us with it-- we will not believe in you.

  11. What! is it a wonder to the people that We revealed to a man from among themselves, saying: Warn the people and give good news to those who believe that theirs is a footing of firmness with their Lord. The unbelievers say: This is most surely a manifest enchanter.

  12. So when the truth came to them from Us they said: This is most surely clear enchantment!

  13. Musa said: Do you say (this) of the truth when it has come to you? Is it magic? And the magicians are not successful.

  14. And Firon said: Bring to me every skillful magician.

  15. And when the magicians came, Musa said to them: Cast down what you have to cast.

  16. So when they cast down, Musa said to them: What you have brought is deception; surely Allah will make it naught; surely Allah does not make the work of mischief-makers to thrive.

  17. And He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six periods-- and His dominion (extends) on the water-- that He might manifest to you, which of you is best in action, and if you say, surely you shall be raised up after death, those who disbelieve would certainly say: This is nothing but clear magic.

  18. They would certainly say: Only our eyes have been covered over, rather we are an enchanted people.

  19. We know best what they listen to when they listen to you, and when they take counsel secretly, when the unjust say: You follow only a man deprived of reason.

  20. And certainly We gave Musa nine clear signs; so ask the children of Israel. When he came to them, Firon said to him: Most surely I deem you, O Musa, to be a man deprived of reason.

  21. Said he: Have you come to us that you should turn us out of our land by your magic, O Musa?

  22. So we too will produce before you magic like it, therefore make between us and you an appointment, which we should not break, (neither) we nor you, (in) a central place.

  23. They said: These are most surely two magicians who wish to turn you out from your land by their magic and to take away your best traditions.

  24. He said: Nay! cast down. then lo! their cords and their rods-- it was imaged to him on account of their magic as if they were running.

  25. And cast down what is in your right hand; it shall devour what they have wrought; they have wrought only the plan of a magician, and the magician shall not be successful wheresoever he may come from.

  26. And the magicians were cast down making obeisance; they said: We believe in the Lord of Haroun and Musa.

  27. (Firon) said: You believe in him before I give you leave; most surely he is the chief of you who taught you enchantment, therefore I will certainly cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will certainly crucify you on the trunks of the palm trees, and certainly you will come to know which of us is the more severe and the more abiding in chastising.

  28. Surely we believe in our Lord that He may forgive us our sins and the magic to which you compelled us; and Allah is better and more abiding.

  29. Their hearts trifling; and those who are unjust counsel together in secret: He is nothing but a mortal like yourselves; what! will you then yield to enchantment while you see?

  30. They will say: (This is) Allah's. Say: From whence are you then deceived?

  31. Or (why is not) a treasure sent down to him, or he is made to have a garden from which he should eat? And the unjust say: You do not follow any but a man deprived of reason.

  32. (Firon) said to the chiefs around him: Most surely this is a skillful magician,

  33. Who desires to turn you out of your land with his magic; what is it then that you advise?

  34. That they should bring to you every skillful magician.

  35. So the magicians were gathered together at the appointed time on the fixed day,

  36. Haply we may follow the magicians, if they are the vanquishers.

  37. And when the magicians came, they said to Firon: Shall we get a reward if we are the vanquishers?

  38. And the magicians were thrown down prostrate;

  39. Said he: You believe in him before I give you permission; most surely he is the chief of you who taught you the magic, so you shall know: certainly I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and certainly I will crucify you all.

  40. They said: You are only of the deluded ones;

  41. They said: You are only of those deluded;

  42. So when Our clear signs came to them, they said: This is clear enchantment.

  43. So when Musa came to them with Our clear signs, they said: This is nothing but forged enchantment, and we never heard of it amongst our fathers of old.

  44. But (now) when the truth has come to them from Us, they say: Why is he not given the like of what was given to Musa? What! did they not disbelieve in what Musa was given before? They say: Two magicians backing up each other; and they say: Surely we are unbelievers in all.

  45. And when Our clear communications are recited to them, they say: This is naught but a man who desires to turn you away from that which your fathers worshipped. And they say: This is naught but a lie that is forged. And those who disbelieve say of the truth when it comes to them: This is only clear enchantment.

  46. And they say: This is nothing but clear magic:

  47. And they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves, and the disbelievers say: This IS an enchanter, a liar.

  48. To Firon and Haman and Qaroun, but they said: A lying magician.

  49. And when there came to them the truth they said: This is magic, and surely we are disbelievers in it.

  50. And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way.

  51. And when Our clear communications are recited to them, those who disbelieve say with regard to the truth when it comes to them: This is clear magic.

  52. And in the morning they asked forgiveness.

  53. But he turned away with his forces and said: A magician or a mad man.

  54. Thus there did not come to those before them a messenger but they said: A magician or a mad man.

  55. Is it magic then or do you not see?

  56. And if they see a miracle they turn aside and say: Transient magic.

  57. Surely We sent upon them a stonestorm, except Lut's followers; We saved them a little before daybreak,

  58. And when Isa son of Marium said: O children of Israel! surely I am the messenger of Allah to you, verifying that which is before me of the Taurat and giving the good news of an Messenger who will come after me, his name being Ahmad, but when he came to them with clear arguments they said: This is clear magic.

  59. ~Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others);
