Appears 20 times in the Quran.

  1. O you who believe! do not take for guardians those who take your religion for a mockery and a joke, from among those who were given the Book before you and the unbelievers; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah if you are believers.

  2. And when you call to prayer they make it a mockery and a joke; this is because they are a people who do not understand.

  3. And this world's life is naught but a play and an idle sport and certainly the abode of the hereafter is better for those who guard (against evil); do you not then understand?

  4. And leave those who have taken their religion for a play and an idle sport, and whom this world's life has deceived, and remind (them) thereby lest a soul should be given up to destruction for what it has earned; it shall not have besides Allah any guardian nor an intercessor, and if it should seek to give every compensation, it shall not be accepted from it; these are they who shall be given up to destruction for what they earned; they shall have a drink of boiling water and a painful chastisement because they disbelieved.

  5. And they do not assign to Allah the attributes due to Him when they say: Allah has not revealed anything to a mortal. Say: Who revealed the Book which Musa brought, a light and a guidance to men, which you make into scattered writings which you show while you conceal much? And you were taught what you did not know, (neither) you nor your fathers. Say: Allah then leave them sporting in their vain discourses.

  6. Who take their religion for an idle sport and a play and this life's world deceives them; so today We forsake them, as they neglected the meeting of this day of theirs and as they denied Our communications.

  7. What! do the people of the towns feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the morning while they play?

  8. And if you should question them, they would certainly say: We were only idly discoursing and sporting. Say: Was it at Allah and His communications and His Messenger that you mocked?

  9. Send him with us tomorrow that he may enjoy himself and sport, and surely we will guard him well.

  10. There comes not to them a new reminder from their Lord but they hear it while they sport,

  11. And We did not create the heaven and the earth and what is between them for sport.

  12. They said: Have you brought to us the truth, or are you one of the triflers?

  13. And this life of the world is nothing but a sport and a play; and as for the next abode, that most surely is the life-- did they but know!

  14. So leave them plunging into false discourses and sporting until they meet their day which they are threatened with.

  15. Nay, they are in doubt, they sport.

  16. And We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them in sport.

  17. The life of this world is only idle sport and play, and if you believe and guard (against evil) He will give you your rewards, and will not ask of you your possessions.

  18. Those who sport entering into vain discourses.

  19. Know that this world's life is only sport and play and gaiety and boasting among yourselves, and a vying in the multiplication of wealth and children, like the rain, whose causing the vegetation to grow, pleases the husbandmen, then it withers away so that you will see it become yellow, then it becomes dried up and broken down; and in the hereafter is a severe chastisement and (also) forgiveness from Allah and (His) pleasure; and this world's life is naught but means of deception.

  20. Therefore leave them alone to go on with the false discourses and to sport until they come face to face with that day of theirs with which they are threatened;
