نَحْنُ

  1. And when it is said to them, Do not make mischief in the land, they say: We are but peace-makers.

  2. And when they meet those who believe, they say: We believe; and when they are alone with their Shaitans, they say: Surely we are with you, we were only mocking.

  3. And when your Lord said to the angels, I am going to place in the earth a khalif, they said: What! wilt Thou place in it such as shall make mischief in it and shed blood, and we celebrate Thy praise and extol Thy holiness? He said: Surely I know what you do not know.

  4. And they followed what the Shaitans chanted of sorcery in the reign of Sulaiman, and Sulaiman was not an unbeliever, but the Shaitans disbelieved, they taught men sorcery and that was sent down to the two angels at Babel, Harut and Marut, yet these two taught no man until they had said, "Surely we are only a trial, therefore do not be a disbeliever." Even then men learned from these two, magic by which they might cause a separation between a man and his wife; and they cannot hurt with it any one except with Allah's permission, and they learned what harmed them and did not profit them, and certainly they know that he who bought it should have no share of good in the hereafter and evil was the price for which they sold their souls, had they but known this.

  5. Nay! were you witnesses when death visited Yaqoub, when he said to his sons: What will you serve after me? They said: We will serve your god and the god of your fathers, Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq, one Allah only, and to Him do we submit.

  6. Say: We believe in Allah and (in) that which had been revealed to us, and (in) that which was revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqoub and the tribes, and (in) that which was given to Musa and Isa, and (in) that which was given to the prophets from their Lord, we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit.

  7. (Receive) the baptism of Allah, and who is better than Allah in baptising? and Him do we serve.

  8. Say: Do you dispute with us about Allah, and He is our Lord and your Lord, and we shall have our deeds and you shall have your deeds, and we are sincere to Him.

  9. And their prophet said to them: Surely Allah has raised Talut to be a king over you. They said: How can he hold kingship over us while we have a greater right to kingship than he, and he has not been granted an abundance of wealth? He said: Surely Allah has chosen him in preference to you, and He has increased him abundantly in knowledge and physique, and Allah grants His kingdom to whom He pleases, and Allah is Amplegiving, Knowing.

  10. But when Isa perceived unbelief on their part, he said Who will be my helpers in Allah's way? The disciples said: We are helpers (in the way) of Allah: We believe in Allah and bear witness that we are submitting ones.

  11. Say: We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqoub and the tribes, and what was given to Musa and Isa and to the prophets from their Lord; we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit.

  12. Allah has certainly heard the saying of those who said: Surely Allah is poor and we are rich. I will record what they say, and their killing the prophets unjustly, and I will say: Taste the chastisement of burning.

  13. And the Jews and the Christians say: We are the sons of Allah and His beloved ones. Say: Why does He then chastise you for your faults? Nay, you are mortals from among those whom He has created, He forgives whom He pleases and chastises whom He pleases; and Allah's is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and to Him is the eventual coming.

  14. And they say: There is nothing but our life of this world, and we shall not be raised.

  15. And the enchanters came to Firon (and) said: We must surely have a reward if we are the prevailing ones.

  16. They said: O Musa! will you cast, or shall we be the first to cast?

  17. And they said: Whatever sign you may bring to us to charm us with it-- we will not believe in you.

  18. Say: Do you await for us but one of two most excellent things? And we await for you that Allah will afflict you with punishment from Himself or by our hands. So wait; we too will wait with you.

  19. And from among those who are round about you of the dwellers of the desert there are hypocrites, and from among the people of Medina (also); they are stubborn in hypocrisy; you do not know them; We know them; We will chastise them twice then shall they be turned back to a grievous chastisement

  20. They said: Have you come to us to turn us away from what we found our fathers upon, and (that) greatness in the land should be for you two? And we are not going to believe in you.

  21. They said: O Hud! you have not brought to us any clear argument and we are not going to desert our gods for your word, and we are not believers in you:

  22. We narrate to you the best of narratives, by Our revealing to you this Quran, though before this you were certainly one of those who did not know.

  23. When they said: Certainly Yusuf and his brother are dearer to our father than we, though we are a (stronger) company; most surely our father is in manifest error:

  24. They said: Surely if the wolf should devour him notwithstanding that we are a (strong) company, we should then certainly be losers.

  25. They said: Confused dreams, and we do not know the interpretation of dreams.

  26. Surely We have revealed the Reminder and We will most surely be its guardian.

  27. They would certainly say: Only our eyes have been covered over, rather we are an enchanted people.

  28. And most surely We bring to life and cause to die and We are the heirs.

  29. And there is not a town but We will destroy it before the day of resurrection or chastise it with a severe chastisement; this is written in the Divine ordinance.

  30. Surely We inherit the earth and all those who are on it, and to Us they shall be returned.

  31. Again We do certainly know best those who deserve most to be burned therein.

  32. So we too will produce before you magic like it, therefore make between us and you an appointment, which we should not break, (neither) we nor you, (in) a central place.

  33. There is naught but our life in this world; we die and we live and we shall not be raised again.

  34. He is naught but a man who has forged a lie against Allah, and we are not going to believe in him.

  35. Certainly we are promised this, and (so were) our fathers aforetime; this is naught but stories of those of old.

  36. Repel evil by what is best; We know best what they describe.

  37. And when the magicians came, they said to Firon: Shall we get a reward if we are the vanquishers?

  38. So they cast down their cords and their rods and said: By Firon's power, we shall most surely be victorious.

  39. And we are not going to be punished.

  40. Then they will say: Shall we be respited?

  41. They said: We are possessors of strength and possessors of mighty prowess, and the command is yours, therefore see what you will command.

  42. We have certainly been promised this, we and our fathers before; these are naught but stories of the ancients

  43. And how many a town have We destroyed which exulted in its means of subsistence, so these are their abodes, they have not been dwelt in after them except a little, and We are the inheritors,

  44. He said: Surely in it is Lut. They said: We know well who is in it; we shall certainly deliver him and his followers, except his wife; she shall be of those who remain behind.

  45. And do not dispute with the followers of the Book except by what is best, except those of them who act unjustly, and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and our Allah and your Allah is One, and to Him do we submit.

  46. Those who were proud shall say to those who were deemed weak: Did we turn you away from the guidance after it had come to you? Nay, you (yourselves) were guilty

  47. And they say: We have more wealth and children, and we shall not be punished.

  48. Surely We give life to the dead, and We write down what they have sent before and their footprints, and We have recorded everything in a clear writing.

  49. Is it then that we are not going to die,

  50. Except our previous death? And we shall not be chastised?

  51. And most surely we are they who draw themselves out in ranks,

  52. And we are most surely they who declare the glory (of Allah).

  53. We are your guardians in this world's life and in the hereafter, and you shall have therein what your souls desire and you shall have therein what you ask for:

  54. Will they distribute the mercy of your Lord? We distribute among them their livelihood in the life of this world, and We j have exalted some of them above others in degrees, that some of them may take others in subjection; and the mercy of your Lord is better than what they amass.

  55. There is naught but our first death and we shall not be raised again.

  56. And when it was said, Surely the promise of Allah is true and as for the hour, there is no doubt about it, you said: We do not know what the hour is; we do not think (that it will come to pass) save a passing thought, and we are not at all sure.

  57. And certainly We created man, and We know what his mind suggests to him, and We are nearer to him than his life-vein.

  58. Surely We give life and cause to die, and to Us is the eventual coming;

  59. Or do they say: We are a host allied together to help each other?

  60. We have created you, why do you not then assent?

  61. Is it you that create it or are We the creators?

  62. We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome,

  63. Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth?

  64. Nay! we are deprived.

  65. Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders?

  66. Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers?

  67. We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert.

  68. And We are nearer to it than you, but you do not see--

  69. O you who believe! be helpers (in the cause) of Allah, as~ Isa son of Marium said to (his) disciples: Who are my helpers in the cause of Allah? The disciples said: We are helpers (in the cause) of Allah. So a party of the children of Israel believed and another party disbelieved; then We aided those who believed against their enemy, and they became uppermost.

  70. Nay! we are made to suffer privation.

  71. To bring instead (others) better than them, and We shall not be overcome.

  72. Surely We Ourselves have revealed the Quran to you revealing (it) in portions.
