  1. Do you then hope that they would believe in you, and a party from among them indeed used to hear the Word of Allah, then altered it after they had understood it, and they know (this).

  2. And when it is said to them, Follow what Allah has revealed, they say: Nay! we follow what we found our fathers upon. What! and though their fathers had no sense at all, nor did they follow the right way.

  3. O you who believe! do not take for intimate friends from among others than your own people; they do not fall short of inflicting loss upon you; they love what distresses you; vehement hatred has already appeared from out of their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater still; indeed, We have made the communications clear to you, if you will understand.

  4. And there are those of them who hear you, but can you make the deaf to hear though they will not understand?

  5. And it is not for a soul to believe except by Allah's permission; and He casts uncleanness on those who will not understand.

  6. And We have not sent before you but men from (among) the people of the towns, to whom We sent revelations. Have they not then travelled in the land and seen what was the end of those before them? And certainly the abode of the hereafter is best for those who guard (against evil); do you not then understand?

  7. Have they not travelled in the land so that they should have hearts with which to understand, or ears with which to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.

  8. He said: The Lord of the east and the west and what is between them, if you understand.

  9. And certainly he led astray numerous people from among you. What! could you not then understand?

  10. Or have they taken intercessors besides Allah? Say: what! even though they did not ever have control over anything, nor do they understand.

  11. He it is Who created you from dust, then from a small lifegerm, then from a clot, then He brings you forth as a child, then that you may attain your maturity, then that you may be old-- and of you there are some who are caused to die before-- and that you may reach an appointed term, and that you may understand.

  12. And they shall say: Had we but listened or pondered, we should not have been among the inmates of the burning fire.
