  1. Except those who reach a people between whom and you there is an alliance, or who come to you, their hearts shrinking from fighting you or fighting their own people; and if Allah had pleased, He would have given them power over you, so that they should have certainly fought you; therefore if they withdraw from you and do not fight you and offer you peace, then Allah has not given you a way against them.

  2. You will find others who desire that they should be safe from you and secure from their own people; as often as they are sent back to the mischief they get thrown into it headlong; therefore if they do not withdraw from you, and (do not) offer you peace and restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them; and against these We have given you a clear authority.

  3. O you who believe! do not take the unbelievers for friends rather than the believers; do you desire that you should give to Allah a manifest proof against yourselves?

  4. The followers of the Book ask you to bring down to them a book from heaven; so indeed they demanded of Musa a greater thing than that, for they said: Show us Allah manifestly; so the lightning overtook them on account of their injustice. Then they took the calf (for a god), after clear signs had come to them, but We pardoned this; and We gave to Musa clear authority.

  5. And certainly We sent Musa with Our communications and a clear authority,

  6. Their messengers said: Is there doubt about Allah, the Maker of the heavens and the earth? He invites you to forgive you your faults and to respite you till an appointed term. They said: You are nothing but mortals like us; you wish to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship; bring us therefore some clear authority.

  7. These our people have taken gods besides Him; why do they not produce any clear authority in their support? Who is then more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah?

  8. Then We sent Musa and his brother Haroun, with Our communications and a clear authority,

  9. I will most certainly punish him with a severe punishment, or kill him, or he shall bring to me a clear plea.

  10. Or have you a clear authority?

  11. And certainly We sent Musa with Our communications and clear authority,

  12. And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority:

  13. And in Musa: When We sent him to Firon with clear authority.

  14. Or have they the means by which they listen? Then let their listener bring a clear authority.
